The heart's desire is expressed in this fourth chapter. Raja Bharthari does benti {humble request} to Shiv Ji in the form of seven saloks.

                   TOTAKH SHAND

"IK EK NISIPRIH SHAANT MANNAH.

Heh Shiv Ji {Oh Lord}! When will I see such days? {2}.

1. In the silence of the night with the abundance moon light , the upper banks of the Ganges lights up.

2. May I sit in this light on the banks and recite "Shivaiy namm Shivaiy namm" {name of the creator} in a manner similar to a critically ill person begging for mercy.

3. May my eyes become drenched with the tears of prem {love} and may I sigh slowly.

When will I see such days? {3}.

                   KABITT

"NAIEKHAE NAVOUH GANGA PAATH SAATH NAATH TUMEH,

SUCHH PHOOL PHALOH KARR ROOCH DHARR DHAIVENGHAE.

2. You are worthy of dhian {being meditated upon} , may I be able to concentrate/focus on you. May I sit on the metaphorical cave bed high up in the mountains as a result of which I become respect worthy.

3. I will become sukhi {happy} as a result of attaing Atmik Anand {eternal bliss} , I will develop an unrelenting fondness of the diet of fruit , and as a result of developing preeti {devotion} with Guru's Bachan {divine words} I will become attached to your Charan {Lord's Name}.

4. Heh {oh} the slayer of Sammar Daent {demon} i.e. ShivJi! When as a result of your mercy I will be able to burn away my torment , when will I see those days {rhetorical question}. {4}.

                                      KABITT

"SUNDHRI KE BHOGHAN MAEH SUNDHAR EH KAAL GHAYOH,

DHAAR KE BHAVOT BHAVYOH SOGH MAGH CHIRR MAEH.

This beautiful time has been spent in the bhog {indulgence} of istri {females}. I have wandered around this world for a long time as a result of which I have achieved sogh {sadness}. I had focused on material pleasures.

I have achieved immense torment as a result and I am now tired of such pursuits/activities. I now desire vairaag {renunciation} from these indulgences. I wish to spent the rest of my days either on the banks of the river Ganga or a cave in the high mountains.

May be body be standing. May my eyes be saturated with tears. May my heart be suppressed with the metaphorical water of prem {love} whilst I engage in the Lord's Simran. May I renounce the visheh {physical indulgences} that give rise to the fierce fire of hell. Oh Lord! endow me with such technique which eliminates the need to wander around in the world over and over again.{5}.

                                                KABITT

"KAAL EH PUNAGHMI N SOH TOH BHAYOH BRITHA,

KHEEN TANN DHEEN MANN DHEEN NAARI RAMNEEK MAEH.

SAEKREH KALESOH KOH PARVESOH KARR VIAKUL JAISEH,

The manukha janam {human life} that was acquired as a result of past good deeds has been squandered during this life time. As a result of considering myself to be sareer {physical body} my mann {mind} focused on the physical indulgence of beautiful females.

As a result of engaging in hundreds of painful actions I have become utterly tormented. I have endured this torment as a result of my behaviour/actions. How much further can I say of my torment? {rhetorical question}.

Whatever action I had engaged in created an abundance of dukh {torment} , haih afsos! {sigh} I am still performing such deeds.

My past deeds are so compelling that they force me to contemplate corrupt thoughts. I will not become shaant {at peace} until these karam {deeds} are extinguished , I know this to be wise and correct. {6}.

To be continued................

                                                DOHRA

"NASHT ADHRISHT GYAN BINN GYAN N BINN VAIRAAG.

KABITT

"GANGHA TEER PARR UTT HIMM GHIRR SILLAH PARR,

BAANDHEH PADHMAASAN KOH MANN INDREH JEET KEH.

BRAMH KE DHIAN KI ABHKAH VIDH SOH NIVAAS,

Keeping the chin four fingers away from chest and focusing the vision between the brow. Abheet = without fear. Bheet = wall. Parbhati naath = Parbhati's husband i.e. Shiv Ji.

Either on the banks of the Ganges or high up the Himalayan mountain , by adopting the padhmasan position May I be able to win over my thoughts.

Using the techniques of Bramh Gyan {divine knowledge} May I take abode in yog  , thus removing the taap {torments} of the mann {mind} in this nirvkalap smadhi {desire less state}.

May aged antelope come and rub their horns against me , may they consider me to be a mere wall.

Heh Parbhati de svami ! {oh husband of Parbhati i.e. ShivJi}! When I will I be able to glimpse such uttam {superior} days! Please make me dharr toh rehat {fear less}.{9}.

                                                DOHRA

"NIJJ VIKHAAN KARR HARRAN KARR SANGHARSHANGH MAMM DEH.

MOHEH KHABAR HEH HARR N HAVEH MAMM ASSS DEH."{10}.

Vikhaan = horns. Sangharsheh = the act of scratching/itching. Asss = in this way/manner.

When will antelope scratch my body with their horns? and I be unaware of such actions , heh Hari! {oh Lord}! may I be in a state where I am unaware of my physical existence. When will my deh {physical body} become like this?{10}.

KABITT

"KAANSHI GANGHA DE KINAREH BHAVV TE KINAREH HOYE ,

KADOH BASOH BASSAN KAUPEEN EK DHARKEH.

DOUYOO HAATH JORR KARR NAYE MAATHAN MOH KAROHMRIDH ,

By becoming vairaagi {renounced} , by adorning a simple loin cloth  , and residing on the banks of Gangha river in Kaanchi when will I take abode there?

I will clasp both hands , with bowed head I will do namaskaar {salutation} and utter the sweet of the the sammar demon slayer ShivJi.

Heh Prabhu {Oh Lord}! Heh Bhavaani's patti {husband}! Heh Shankar! Heh Trinain! Heh Hari! Heh Tripraari! Heh chandrmah dhaari! Heh bhavv {liberation provider}! Heh destroyer of worldly fear!

The recitation of these names:

When this results in my lifespan seeming like a nanosecond , please be merciful and enlighten me as to when these days will draw closer?{11}.

                                                SHANKAR SHAND

"KABB DEHANGH MAEH ARTHEEN SARBANS JORR KARR KARR DEH.

KABB TARUN KARNEH SAATH ANTHEH KARAN POORAN HOYE.

Artheen = beggars. Karr = with. karr = hands. Tarun = new. Dushkaam = immoral deeds. Parnaam = fruit. Trighdaadh = lifeforms such as snakes etc. Seema = remedy. Pikh = having seen.

With both hands bestowing all my worldly possessions to the needy. When will this be so?

With daily new vigour may my anthishkaran {mind} fill , when will it fill?

The life forms such as those of snakes etc. which are the result of immoral deeds , the likes of which alarm me immensely! Seeing these committed deeds frighten me so! {12}.

SHANKAR SHAND

"JIS PUNN BANN MAEH SARD HIMKAR KIRN PARNIT CHAAR.

BANN TAAS MAEH KARR BAAS MAEH NIRVEDH SAEHIT VICHAR.

MAMM CHITT KOH HARR CHARANN KI TARR SHARAN HOYE SARAGH.

JABB IMM BATAVOH BIMMAL RAENA TABBHI MAEH BADBHAAGH." {13}.

Punn = pure. Sard = cold weather Sept./October. Himkarr = Moon. Chaar = Beautiful. Nirvedh = Vairaag = renunciation. Saragh = with love. Bimmal raena = moonlit night.

In the  pure and pleasant jungle where moon's rays are seen in the winter season.  May I reside in that jungle and contemplate Atam Vichar {soul searching} while in a state of vairaag {reunciation}. May I become attached to charan {Naam} of ShivJi with the utmost love and devotion. Upon spending this moonlit night , only then I shall consider myself to be vadbhaagi {truly blessed}. {13}.

                                                DOHRA

"TAJJ SUTANTARR BHAV BHOG KABB LAKHOH NIJAAMAT AAP.

DEH BIKHEH SANDEH BINN VICHROH TABB NIH PAAP." {14}.

Sandeh = deh adyaas = ignorance of self. Niha paap = Punn saroop {good deeds}.

Upon abandoning worldly pleasures when will I consider myself Atam Saroop {soul}.

When I remain in the deh {physical body} but wander around in a state on non deh adhyaas {consider oneself as soul rather than body} , only then will I come to realise Punatama Saroop {pure/unadulterated soul}. {14}.

                                                DOHRA

"MUNOH KARAM JO JO KARE SO SO HAMM HOOH KEEN

TINN KARMOH KE FALOH KARR HAMM TAAGHEH MATT HEEN." {15}.

Whatever deeds were committed by the munni-jann {spiritual people} , I too committed such deeds but I matt heena {without sense} have been the victim of theft. {15}.

Prashan {question}- In which manner have you been robbed?

Uttar {answer}:-

                                      DOHRA

"MUNNAN LAEHOH SHUKH ROOP PHALL HAMM HOOH DUKH PHALL LEEN.

KAREH KARAM SAMVIKHAMM PHALL IYOH MAEH TAAGHYOH DEEN." {16}.

Munni-jann {spiritual people} have attained the pleasure fruition of these deeds , whereas I have attained the fruits of torment. The committed deeds by munni-jann {spiritual people} and myself were samaan { on a par} but the phall {fruition} has been ultah {upside down} and in this way I have been robbed. {16}.

Prashan {question}- In which way were your karam {committed deeds} similar to those of munni-jann {spiritual people}?

Uttar {answer}-

                                                DOHRA

"MUNNAN TAJEH GRIH UCHITT SUKH KARR SANTOKH BIBEK.

AHANGH VIDESH KALESH KARR TYAGHA BHOG ANEK." {17}.

The munni-jann {spiritual people} had done the vairaag {renunciation} of worldly pleasures but I under the desire for materialistic pleasures have endured an abundance of torment , but have the desire to abandon these pleasures. {17}.

DOHRA

"RIKHAN KHIMMAH KARR KALOH KE SODEH DUR BACHNAADH.

MAEH BHI SAHEH KUVAKPALL KARJAACHAN SEVADH." {18}.

Rikhi-jann {spiritual people} have endured the insults of the mools in a patient and forgiving manner. I too have endured such insults but in my case it was for the sake of material pleasures. {18}.

                                                DOHRA

"SEET VAAT AATAP DUSHEH PUNNA KALES APAAR.

MUNNAN SAHEH TAPP DHAAR KARR HAMOH SAHEH SAHEH NAAR. " {19}.

Vaat = air. Aatap = sun/heat. Duheh = difficult.

Bitter cold wind , extreme heat , and enormous difficulties have the munni-jann {spiritual people} endured. I too have endured such difficulties but in my case it was for the moh{attachment} of istri {female}. {19}.

                                                DOHRA

"HARR PADH PADHAN JUGGAL MUNOH DHAYIOH MANN KRIT BAACH.

PRAANOH KAPP DINN RAAT MAEH MIAYOH DHANN KE SAANCH." {20}.

Padham = kamal = lotus flower. Krit = physical body. Juggal = both.

Munni-jann {spiritual people} have tightly clasped both of the metaphorical charan kamal {feet} of Hari {creator's name} through mann {mind} , baani {speech} , and sareer {physical body}. I too spent all my breaths day and night in deep meditation , not for Hari {creator} but for material wealth. {20}.

                                                DOHRA

"KHIMMA TRIPTYUT DURBACHAN SAHOH TAJJO GRIH BHOG.

SRUCHDHYIOH HARR PAYOU MAEH TABB TAA SAMM PHALL HOGH." {21}.

When I adopt a forgiving nature together with tripti {state of satisfaction} , be able to accept harsh words , and having renounced all the homely creature comforts. When I will meditate on Hari's {creator's} name , only then will I receive phall {fruition} on a par with them. {21}.

DOHRA

"AISEH SHANKAR VANTT DINN HEH HARR SHANKAR SHAMBH.

HOYE KABB SAMM MUNNAN KE MAEH VICHROH TAJJ DAMBH." {22}.

Shankar = kalyan = liberation. Shambh = Shiv Ji.

Heh Hari {oh Lord}! Oh Lord the provider of liberation. The days of liberation which are on a par to those of munni-jann {spiritual people} , when will I see such days? That ius why I wish to abandon material pleasures. {22}.

                                                DOHRA

"SVARAG AKHYEH SUKH LAABH HITT KAREH MAKHAADH SRAAGH.

KAREH YAAGH RIKH VAAK GRAEH PUNNA MUNNAN MANN TAAGH." {23}.

Those pleasures of svarag {paradise} which are without naas {permanent} , in order to obtain such yagh etc. are undertaken with utmost devotion before they can be acquired. For the sake of these pleasures I accepted the instructions of rikhi-jann {spiritual people} and undertook yagh {strict endurance} , but I have come to know that I have been the victim of robbery at the hands of these munni-jann {spiritual people}. {23}.

Prashan {question}: How did the Rikhi-jann rob?

                                                DOHRA

"TAH KRITKEH PHALL KOH JABBEH PRAAMRASS MAEH KEEN.

JANNAT PEEN BHAE MAMM RIDHAE HOYE PUNN JABB KHEEN." {24}.

Tah krit = those deeds. Praamrass = contemplated. Jannat = produced. Peen = mammoth/big. Kheen = destroyed.

When I contemplated the fruition of such deeds with Sant-jann {spiritual people} , I then filled with immense fear the likes of which can only be seen upon the depletion of good karam {deeds}. {24}.

                                                DOHRA

"GHIRAT NAAK GHIRTEH ADHEH PURAKH PAKHAAN TURANT.

SEHAT KASHT TEH KASHT TARR ANBHAV KARAT SOH JANTT." {25}.

Naak = svarag = paradise. Ghir = pahadh = mountain. Adheh = underneath. Pakhaan = stone. Turant = very quickly.

Man falls from svarag {paradise} in the same speedy manner in which a stone falls down from a high mountain , the pain/torment endured can only be described or understood by someone who has experienced this themselves. {25}.

                                                DOHRA

"JANAM MARAN DRIDH KARAN KOH ATT DRIDH KARAN SOH BHOG.

TAH HITT MAEH KRITT KAREH BHAVV KOH MAMM SAMM KHALL HOGH." {26}.

Janam-maran {the cycle of rebirths} is the direct result of visheh bhog {indulgence in debauchery}. Those deeds I have committed to the full , that is why who is more moorakh {ultimate fool} than me? {26}.

                                                DOHRA

"BHOG BADHAIY KARR MUNNOH MOHIH LUBHAYOH CHITT.

KARAM GHARAT MAEHEH DAARMAMM HARYOH MUKT SUKH VITT." {27}.

The praises of the indulgences of svarag {paradise} by minni-jann {spiritual people} enticed my mind extremely. In this way by engaging in the ritual endurance of yagh I was thrown in the bottomless pit of indulgences whilst I was robbed blindly of mukht roop sukh {liberation}. {27}.

                                                SORTAH

"KARR SANTOKH BIBEK TAJEH N GRIH KE UCHITT SUKH.

TYAGHEH BHOG ANEK PRAMMAN VIDESH KALESH KARR." {28}.

Together with santokh {state of satisfaction} and vichaar {contemplation} I have not abandoned the homely creature comforts , but as a result of wandering around and the painful physical condition I have abandoned numerous physical indulgences. {28}.

DOHRA

"AHOH KHIMMA KARR KALOH KE SAHEH N DUR BACHNAADH.

SODEH MOHEH KUVAAK PARR KARR JAACHAN SEVAADH."{29}.

It is really acharajh {amazing} that I have not tolerated the insults of fools in a patient and forgiving manner but:-

For the sake of serving others {for financial or physical gain} , I accepted the insults/harsh words of fools. {29}.

                                                DOHRA

"SEET VAAT AATAP DASUEH PUNNA KALESH KADHAMBH.

MAEH N SAHEH TAPP DHAAR KARR SODEH BEECH KUTAMBH."{30}.

Bitterly cold wind , burning sun , and other torments I have not endured by engaging in tapp {strict endurance}.

I did not face these torments by engaging in tapp {strict endurance} but I endured all these torments owing to the moh {attachment} to my kutambh {family}. {30}.

                                                DOHRA

"DHIYAHOH DHANN KO AHEH NISEH MANN KRIT BACHAN SANEM.

ISHAR KE PADH PADHAM KO DHIYHOH TIOH N SAPREM." {31}.

In the way that I meditate with mann {mind} , bani {words} , and sareer {body} day and night for material wealth/pleasures. I have not ever in that way meditated with love and devotion on the Lord's name. {31}.

                                                DOHRA

"EH GUR PASCHA TAAP URBHAOH N AATAM VITT.

BINN BICHAAR MAEH MUGHADH KO LAYOH VISHYOH BHAVV JITT." {32}.

It is with utmost regret that my heart is void of the metaphorical wealth of the Lord's name. The reason for this state is because I , the ultimate fool , have been conquered by worldly visheh {debauchery}. {32}.

                                                DOHRA

"DUSHT ADRISHT SANEH YUT URR KAGGAR PARR VARRAN.

BHOG RAAG MAEH SOH N LAHEH ANKK VICHAAR AVARRAN." {33}.

Adrisht = accumulation of past deeds. Saneh = tel = oil. kaggar = paper. varran = words. Avarran = destroy. Raag = prem = devotion.

On the metaphorical paper of my mind has been written the words of bad deeds with the metaphorical oil/ink of material attachment. That is why:-

The mind perpetually focuses on indulgences of debauchery. These metaphorical writing on the mind do not wash away. Only aatam vichaar {divine knowledge} can erase these inscribed deeds. {33}.

That is why do the benti {humble request}:-

                                                SORTAH

"PRABHU ANAATH KE NAATH MAEH ANAATH KE MAATH PARR.

KRIPA DRISHT KE SAATH , SHIVA NAATH NIJJ HAATH DHARR." {34}.

Shiva = Parbhati. Shivanaath = ShivJi.

Heh anaatha de naath {Oh master of neglected} Prabhu {creator}! Upon my anaath's {neglected} head , heh ShivJi {creator in the form of}! please place your merciful hand. {34}.

                                                DOHRA

"BINN BAIRAAG BIBEK MAEH TAVV PADH PANKAJ TEK.

SRI SHANKAR MAMM SHANKRO DE VAIRAAG BIBEK." {35}.

Shankroh = do kalyan = liberation.

I being void of vairaag {renunciation} and bibek {distinguish between good and evil} take shelter in your name Lord. Heh Hari Shankar {creator} by bestowing vairaag {renunciation} and vivek {distinguish between good and evil} please provide me with kalyan {liberation}. {35}.

CHAUPAY

"BHAV MAEH VAEHI PURKH VADBHAGHI.

ITT UTT VOGH CHAAH JIH TYAGHI.

KARR NIVAAS GIRR KANDHAR MAAHI.

PARAM PRAKASH ROOP HARR DHAIYHI." {36}.

"TISSEH DHIYAN KE AANAND KARKE.

TINHEH DRIGGHAN TE UDHAK JOH SARKEH.

BAESS NISSANK ANKK KE MAAHI.

ACHVIHEH VIHANGH MARTT JALL TAAHI." {37}.

In this world only those are vadbhaghi {blessed} who have forsaken the desire for material pleasures and have taken abode in the metaphorical cave high up in the mountains for the sake of meditation of the Lord. It is the result of this unrelenting love that their eyes are drenched with the tears of bliss. The birds sit in their laps and taste these drops of tears in an non fearing manner. {37}.

                                                CHAUPAY

"DHANN JANNOH KI UMMRAH AISEH.

PARRI HOTT KAE BHAAKI JAISEH.

HAMM MATT MANDH ADHANN KUBHAGHI.

BHUGHAT MUKT BIBBH TE VAIRAAGI." {38}.

KEWAL VIARTH MANORATH SANGHA.

MAMM SHUBH AVADH BHAVATT PARR BHANGHA.

BAAPI BAAGH TADHAAGH KINAREH.

SUNDAR MANDAR HOHEH HAMAREH." {39}.

Adhann = without wealth. Bipp te = from both. Avadh = lifespan. Bhavatt = does happen. Bhangha = finishes. Tadagh = Pool etc.

Those people are truly blessed whose life is spent in the said manner.

We with mandh budhi {low intellect} and bad fortune are not blessed since we have not turned our backs on material indulgences and sought the sanctuary of mukti {liberation} invoking deeds. {38}.

With desires of futile fantasises my precious life is being eroded. In other words a flight of fantasy takes place that on the banks of a stream may there be large beautiful houses. {39}.

                                                CHAUPAY

"SUPAGH BHAVANI SEH TEH ANTARR.

KAREH SOH KREEDA KEL NIRANTARR.

ASSS MANN RAJ KAUTAKEH DHIAYVAT.

ASSI AUKHAH PARREH BITTAVATT. {40}.

KINCHATT SANCHITT BHOGH MAJJARI.

PARRI HOTT HATT VAES HAMARRI.

TINNOH SAMAAN SOH DIVASS HAMAREH.

KABB AAVENGHEH HEH SAMRAREH." {41}.

Subhaagh = beautiful. Bhavaani = female. Kreeda = indulgences. Kel = sexual intercourse. Nirantar = continuous. Manoh raj = desire. Aukheh = age. Samrareh = Oh ShivJi. Kinchat = few. Sanchitt = acquired goods. Hath = finished.

With beautiful female may I indulge in sexual intercourse within these houses , it is with these thoughts that my mind is always contemplating and my time is being eroded in such fantasises. {40}.

The few indulgences that I did engage in , my age is being eroded in such.

Oh slayer of Sammar demon! {ShivJi}! When will I see the days that are on a par with maha purash {spiritual people}? {41}.

                                                DOHRA

"NIJJ BHAVV HITT BHAVV TYAGH HITT BOH BHAVV MAEH BHAVV DHIAUY.

SEKH AIYU NIJJ KABB VIANGH SUKH SOH TATHA VIHOUH." {42}.

Bhavv = liberation. Bhavv = world. Bhoh = oh. Bhaav =ShivJi. Sekh = the rest of. Viangh = will be spent.

For the sake of kalyan {liberation} and worldly renunciation , oh ShivJi! I meditate upon you.

When will the rest of life be spent in bliss , please bless me with this bliss. {42}.

                                                DOHRA

"BHARAT SHATAK VAIRAAG KOH DHAIY CHATURTHOH BUSS.

KARI SHUBH ISHA BHARAT NRIPP TAH BINN JEEVAN PUHSS." {43}.

The fourth adhaiy {chapter} of Bharthari Ji's Vairrag shatak has been completed. In this chapter Raja Bharthari has described good desires without which life is akin to rubbish. {43}.

ITT CHATURTH ADHAIY {4}. {End of fourth chapter}.

To be continued................
